Tuesday:

It’s Tuesday, Diwali day in Durban that is as much of an Indian city as is an African one. It took 16 hours to fly here, and its where I will be working for the next month on editing a TV series I shot last summer

I actually spent a day without hearing the words fiscal cliff or David Petraeus. Here the scandals revolve around South African president Zuma and the ANC government.

I will have more to say about that when I learn more. For now, I am coping with jet lag, a six hour time difference, and the need to get more sleep.

Meanwhile, the scandal du jour in the US of A claims a new big fish, according to the NY Times:

PERTH, Australia — Gen. John Allen, the top American and NATO commander in Afghanistan, is under investigation for what a senior defense official said early Tuesday was “inappropriate communication’’ with Jill Kelley, the woman in Tampa, Florida who was seen as a rival for David H. Petraeus’s attentions by Paula Broadwell, who had an extramarital affair with Mr. Petraeus.

In a statement released to reporters on his plane en route to Australia early Tuesday, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said that the F.B.I. on Sunday had referred “a matter involving” General Allen to the Pentagon.

The defense official said that General Allen, who is also married, told Pentagon officials he had done nothing wrong. Neither he nor Ms. Kelley could be reached for comment early Tuesday. Mr. Panetta’s statement praised General Allen for his leadership in Afghanistan and said that “he is entitled to due process in this matter.’’

But the Pentagon inspector general’s investigation opens up what could be a widening scandal into two of the most prominent generals of their generation — Mr. Petraeus, who was the top commander in Iraq and Afghanistan before he retired from the military and became director of the C.I.A., only to resign on Friday because of the affair, and General Allen, who also served in Iraq and now commands 68,000 American troops in Afghanistan.

Although General Allen will remain the commander in Afghanistan, Mr. Panetta said that he had asked President Obama to put on hold General Allen’s nomination to be the commander of American forces in Europe and the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, two positions he was to move into after what was expected to be easy confirmation by the Senate. Mr. Panetta said in his statement that Mr. Obama agreed with his decision.

Note: The FBI uncovered this affair in August. We only learned about it the day AFTER the election. Of course the real scandals are the wars that both of these Generals fought and “surged” through!

•New scandal: FBI agent BANNED from investigation into Petraeus’s affair after he ‘grew obsessed’ with a woman at the center of the probe and sent her shirtless photos

A federal agent was pulled off the investigation into David Petraeus’s illicit contact with Paula Broadwell when the agent reportedly became obsessed with another woman involved in the probe, The Wall Street Journal reports. The FBI found that the agent had sent shirtless photos of himself to Jill Kelley, the Tampa woman who reportedly received a half dozen emails from Broadwell that warned Kelley to stay away from Petraeus. The emails were sent from anonymous accounts. That same agent was a friend of Kelley’s and he had started the FBI investigation into the emails — which eventually led to Petraeus’s downfall — after Kelley came to him for help upon receiving the anonymous threats.

FBI Agent in Petraeus Case Under Scrutiny

A federal agent who launched the investigation that ultimately led to the resignation of Central Intelligence Agency chief David Petraeus was barred from taking part in the case over the summer due to superiors’ concerns that he was personally involved in the case, according to officials familiar with the probe. After being blocked from the case, the agent continued to press the matter, relaying his concerns to a member of Congress, the officials said. New details about how the Federal Bureau of Investigation handled the case suggest that even as the bureau delved into Mr. Petraeus’s personal life, the agency had to address conduct by its own agent-who allegedly sent shirtless photos of himself to a woman involved in the case prior to the investigation.

FBI search Petraeus mistress Paula Broadwell’s home

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is searching the home of the woman who had an extramarital affair with former CIA director David Petraeus. FBI spokeswoman Shelley Lynch confirmed to the BBC on Monday night that agents were at Paula Broadwell’s house in Charlotte, North Carolina. The FBI spokeswoman told the BBC that agents arrived at the Broadwell home in the Dilworth neighbourhood of the city just before 21:00 local time (02:00 GMT).

•FBI: Petraeus Affair Part of Criminal Probe

The FBI withheld its findings about Gen. David Petraeus’s affair from the White House and congressional leaders because the agency considered them the result of a criminal investigation that never reached the threshold of an intelligence probe, law enforcement sources said today. The sources said agents followed department guidelines that generally bar sharing information about developing criminal investigations. The FBI is also aware of its history under former director J. Edgar Hoover of playing politics and digging into the lives of public figures. The FBI’s focus was on whether laws were broken, in this case whether federal cyber-harassment statutes were violated.

•CLG: E-mail threats triggered probe of Petraeus, officials say

“The collapse of the dazzling career of CIA Director David H. Petraeus was triggered when a woman with whom he was having an affair sent threatening e-mails to another woman close to him, according to three senior law enforcement officials with knowledge of the episode. The recipient of the e-mails was so frightened that she went to the FBI for protection and help tracking down the sender, according to the officials. The FBI investigation traced the threats to Paula Broadwell, a former military officer and a Petraeus biographer, and uncovered explicit e-mails between Broadwell and Petraeus, the officials said.”

So much for his skill as a clandestine operator. And now he’s gone.

Add to this, the fact that the news of this indiscretion on his part somehow only surfaced the day after the election.

OMG.

Here is his resignation letter.

Have a look at a recent Broadwell Interview.

And, it turns out, that her husband wrote the NY Times ethicist for an opinion on his wife’s affair—apparently to signal the two of them.

I don’t really care about either of them–was his indiscretion worse than the war crimes he committed? Just a few days after the election I told a Saudia Arabian TV Channel that we are back in the big muddy, back to the stalemate and paralysis of the status quo ante that insures that these days, little good can come out of Washington DC.

Obama won–but what did he win, but the power to stop worse things from happening?

Frank Rich Says Farewell to Romney in Fantasyland

Mitt Romney is already slithering into the mists of history, or at least La Jolla, gone and soon to be forgotten. A weightless figure unloved and distrusted by even his own supporters, he was always destined, win or lose, to be a transitory front man for a radical-right GOP intent on barreling full-speed down the Randian path laid out by its true 2012 standard-bearer, Paul Ryan. But as was said of another unsuccessful salesman who worked the New England territory, attention must be paid to Mitt as the door slams behind him in the aftermath of Barack Obama’s brilliant victory. Though Romney has no political heirs in his own party or elsewhere, he does leave behind a cultural legacy of sorts. He raised Truthiness to a level of chutzpah beyond Stephen Colbert’s fertile imagination.

Finally, Florida Finishes Its Vote Count

LBN: President Barack Obama was declared the winner of Florida’s 29 electoral votes Saturday, ending a four-day count with a razor-thin margin that narrowly avoided an automatic recount that would have brought back memories of 2000. No matter the outcome, Obama had already clinched re-election and now has 332 electoral votes to Romneys 206. The Florida Secretary of States Office said that with almost 100 percent of the vote counted, Obama led Republican challenger Mitt Romney 50 percent to 49.1 percent, a difference of about 74,000 votes. That was over the half-percent margin where a computer recount would have been automatically ordered unless Romney had waived it.”

Time for me to leave the country later this morning.

If you can’t say anything good…..

NYT: Meet The Mistress: Woman Linked to Petraeus Is a West Point Graduate and Lifelong High Achiever

WASHINGTON — Paula Broadwell, whose affair with the nation’s C.I.A. director led to his resignation on Friday, was the valedictorian of her high school class and homecoming queen, a fitness champion at West Point with a graduate degree from Harvard, and a model for a machine gun manufacturer.

It may have been those qualities — and a string of achievements that began in her native North Dakota, where she was state student council president, an all-state basketball player and orchestra concertmistress — that drew the attention of David H. Petraeus, the nation’s top spy and a four-star general, as the two spent hours together for a biography of Mr. Petraeus that Ms. Broadwell co-wrote.

Ms. Broadwell’s name burst into public view on Friday evening after Mr. Petraeus resigned abruptly amid an F.B.I. investigation that uncovered evidence of their relationship.

But Ms. Broadwell was hardly shy about her interactions with Mr. Petraeus as she promoted her book, “All In: The Education of General David Petraeus,” in media appearances earlier this year. She had unusual access, she noted in promotional appearances, taping many of her interviews for her book while running six-minute miles with Mr. Petraeus in the thin mountain air of the Afghan capital.

Ms. Broadwell said in an interview in February that Mr. Petraeus was enjoying his new civilian life at the C.I.A., where he became director in September 2011. “It was a huge growth period for him, because he realized he didn’t have to hide behind the shield of all those medals and stripes on his arm,” she said. Ms. Broadwell was 39 at the time.

Her biography on the Penguin Speakers Bureau Web site says that she is a research associate at Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London. She received a master’s in public administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.”

Question: Why the Timing? Supposedly, she broke up with him on September 11. Why Did this story come out after the election. When did the President know, and when did we learn about it? Hmmmm!

Ronald Kessler: FBI Investigates CIA, “Sex Under A Desk”

(LBN) The resignation of David H. Petraeus as CIA director followed an FBI investigation of many months, raising the question of why he was not forced out until after the election. In his letter of resignation, Petraeus cited an extra-marital affair he had been having.

After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair, Petraeus said in his letter to President Obama. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. Petraeus, who had a distinguished military career, revealed no additional details. However, an FBI source says the investigation began when American intelligence mistook an email Petraeus had sent to his girlfriend as a reference to corruption.

Petraeus was commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan from July 4, 2010 until July 18, 2011. The investigation began last spring, but the FBI then pored over his emails when he was stationed in Afghanistan. The woman who was having an affair with Petraeus is a journalist who had been writing about him. Given his top secret clearance and the fact that Petraeus is married, the FBI continued to investigate and intercept Petraeus email exchanges with the woman. The emails include sexually explicit references to such items as sex under a desk.

Such a relationship is a breach of top secret security requirements and could have compromised Petraeus.
At some point after Petraeus was sworn in as CIA director on Sept. 6, 2011, the woman broke up with him. However, Petraeus continued to pursue her, sending her thousands of emails over the last several months, raising even more questions about his judgment. Neither Petraeus nor the CIAs Office of Public Affairs had any immediate comment. FBI agents on the case expected that Petraeus would be asked to resign immediately rather than risk the possibility that he could be blackmailed to give intelligence secrets to foreign intelligence agencies or criminals. In addition, his pursuit of the woman could have distracted him as the CIA was giving Congress reports on the attack on the Benghazi consulate on Sept. 11.

The CIA s reporting to Congress included a claim that protests over a YouTube video played a role in the attacks, thus allowing Obama to initially discount the possibility that the U.S. had suffered another terrorist attack just before the election. In contrast, based on real time video and reports, the State Department was reporting that the attack that led to the deaths of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, was terrorist-related.

The State Department reported that there were no protests at the consulate. Still, the White House, with concurrence by the FBI and Justice Department, held off on asking for Petraeus resignation until after the election. His resignation occurred three days after the election, avoiding the possibility that Obamas ill-fated appointment of Petraeus could become an issue in the election.FBI agents on the case were aware that such a decision had been made to hold off on forcing him out until after the election and were outraged. The decision was made to delay the resignation apparently to avoid potential embarrassment to the president before the election, an FBI source says. To leave him in such a sensitive position where he was vulnerable to potential blackmail for months compromised our security and is inexcusable. Michael Kortan, the FBIs assistant director for public affairs, said he had no comment.

Robert Kennedy Jr Praises Barack’s Staff Speech

President Obama’s heartfelt speech to his campaign staff earlier this week was an incredible reminder of the power of public service and of our ability to make a difference. It was wonderful to see the President reference Robert Kennedy’s Ripple of Hope speech and carry forward with his staff the message of individual action and collective impact that meant so much to my father.

Obama did not talk about higher tax rates in his speech, but said he would not accept a deal that cut spending and entitlements but did not ask wealthier households to pay more taxes.

I could go on. There are two or three hundred appointments to fill, but I think the picture is clear. It would be an administration that represented Americans, not special interests and foreigners, and an administration that put the country back in order.

But, of course, it is all a dream. No one who actually cares about our country is permitted to serve in public office.

Daily Beast: Skyfall, the Gayest James Bond movie Ever

The latest James Bond film, Skyfall, opens Friday and features a deliciously evil gay villain, played by Javier Bardem, and an older, more grizzled 007. The Daily Beast’s Ramin Setoodeh and Marlow Stern debate the film’s merits–and whether it’s the most homoerotic Bond movie yet.

•Human Rights Watch: Over Two Billion People Now Connected to Internet, But…

While citing the rapid development and growth of the Internet, a top UN official urged greater efforts ‘to bridge the ongoing digital divide” and ensure that everyone around the world can harness its benefits.

There were 2.3 billion Internet users worldwide at the end of 2011, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Wu Hongbo, said on 6 November 2012 in his address to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which opened in Baku, Azerbaijan.

In addition, mobile broadband reached more than 1 billion subscriptions, while the use of fixed broadband was estimated at 590 million subscriptions.

Ways to Address the Digital Divide

“While this progress is surely significant, we have a long way to go in our collective efforts to bridge the digital divide,” he told participants, noting that only a quarter of inhabitants in the developing world were online by the end of 2011.

“This low number of Internet users in developing countries calls for increased efforts in shaping and implementing appropriate policies to assist everyone to harness the benefits of the Internet, and advance sustainable development,” stated Wu.

*David Swanson: About the Untold History of the United States

Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznik have produced a phenomenally great book of U.S. history, and an accompanying television series premiering on Showtime on Monday. Having just read half the book and having watched an advance copy of the first episode, my conclusion is that the book is dramatically better than the TV show, but that both are at the top of what’s available in their respective genres.

The Untold History of the United States is not people’s history in the sense of telling the stories of popular movements. This is very much top-down history dominated by key figures in power. But it is honest history that tears through myths and presents a reality not expected by most Americans — and backs it up with well-documented facts.

This is a history that focuses on foreign policy, and — at least in the book — begins with World War I. No book can include everything one might have liked to see included, but this one is a terrific sampling of things I’ve wished were told more often and things I never knew before. Some will call it a depressing tale lacking “all the good things the United States has done too.” I call it a refreshingly honest tale aimed at improving our conduct going forward. I also come away with a deep sense of gratitude that — for the moment anyway — our society is still around at all. After considering the steps that certain presidents and scientists have taken to destroy life as we know it, one has to be amazed we’re still here. Truman and Eisenhower figure prominently, and I believe that I have found in these authors a couple of men who might just agree with me that Harry Truman is the worst president we’ve ever seen. They certainly make that case quite powerfully.

The book is excellent on World War I and on the New Deal, as well as on forbidden topics like the Wall Street Putsch of 1934 or the Nye Committee hearings on war profiteering. The section on the dropping of the nuclear bombs on Japan is the best I’ve seen. The history of the Cold War and who started it is invaluable. The authors take on McCarthyism, the Eisenhower presidency, the Mossadeq overthrow, the Guzman overthrow, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and numerous other topics with great skill and insight — and careful research.
