It is unclear what kind of planes. A source told Fox News that it is not clear whether the warplanes crossed into Syrian airspace or whether the missiles were fired from across the border. U.S. forces were not involved.

The New York Times: Israel Bombs Syria as the U.S. Considers Its Own Military Options

WASHINGTON — Israel aircraft bombed a target in Syria overnight Thursday, an Obama administration official said Friday night, as United States officials said they were considering military options, including carrying out their own airstrikes.

American officials did not provide details on the target of the Israeli strike. But in late January, Israel carried out airstrikes against SA-17 antiaircraft weapons, which the Israelis feared were about to be moved to the Hezbollah Shiite militia in Lebanon.

Israel has been worried that chemical weapons and advanced arms might be transferred to Hezbollah from Syria, and the Israeli military has made clear that it is prepared to take action to stop such shipments.

President Bashar al-Assad of Syria has long had a close relationship with Hezbollah, and Syria has been a gateway for shipping Iranian weapons to the militia.

Hezbollah has sent trainers and advisers to Syria to help Mr. Assad with his war against the Syrian opposition, American officials say, and Syrian opposition officials report that Hezbollah fighters are also involved in the conflict.

A spokesman for the Israeli Embassy in Washington declined on Friday night to comment on the Israeli attack, which was first reported by CNN, saying only in a statement, “Israel is determined to prevent the transfer of chemical weapons or other game-changing weaponry by the Syrian regime to terrorists, specially to Hezbollah in Lebanon.”

The Israeli attack came as the Obama administration — as part of its examination of possible responses to obtaining conclusive proof that Mr. Assad has used chemical weapons — is considering military options with allies. Those options include attacking Syria’s antiaircraft systems, military aircraft and some of its missile fleet, according to senior officials from several countries.

Those officials say that attacking the chemical stockpiles directly has been all but ruled out. “You could cause exactly the disaster you are trying to prevent,” a senior Israeli military official said in an interview last week in Tel Aviv.

•BBC: Some Reaction

Analysts say the US and its allies are discussing possible action including air strikes to enforce a no-fly zone, but Syria’s ally Russia is strongly opposed to such measures.

‘Enemy planes’

US officials say the Israeli air strike happened overnight Thursday into Friday, but the aircraft did not enter Syrian airspace.

Lebanon’s army released a statement saying Israeli warplanes had flown over Lebanese airspace for hours during Friday.

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman denounced the flights and accused Israel of breaking international law.

Note: As of 3:40 AM, New York Time, I have not seen news of Russian or Iranian reaction or a response from Hezbollah.

•Obama doesn’t foresee US ground troops in Syria

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) – President Barack Obama said Friday he doesn’t foresee any circumstance requiring the U.S. to send ground troops into Syria, even as Washington pursues more evidence about the regime’s purported use of chemical weapons. “I do not foresee a scenario in which boots on the ground in Syria, American boots on the ground, would not only be good for America

May 3, 2013 – The East Timor and Indonesia Action Network (ETAN) and West Papua Advocacy Team (WPAT) strongly urge the U.S. government to condemn the unwarranted assault by Indonesian government security forces on peaceful May 1 demonstrations in West Papua. They called for U.S. security assistance to be curtailed, absent an end to such egregious human rights violations and credible prosecution and sentencing of the perpetrators of these crimes among Indonesia’s military, police, and “anti-terror” forces.

Widespread nonviolent Papuan protests commemorating the 50th anniversary of the United Nations 1963 handover of West Papua to Indonesian control were met with security force brutality. At least two West Papuans were killed; many more were wounded and/or detained.

•Obama names anti-union, former bigtime subprime banker, billionaire as Commerce Secretary

Chicago Tribune – Making official what many have expected for weeks, President Barack Obama has nominated Chicago business executive Penny Pritzker, a longtime political supporter and heavyweight fundraiser, as his new Commerce secretary.

Pritzker’s nomination could prove controversial. She is on the board of Chicago-based Hyatt Hotels Corp., which was founded by her wealthy family and has had rocky relations with labor unions, and she could face questions about the failure of a bank partly owned by her family.

With a personal fortune estimated at $1.85 billion, Pritzker, 54, is listed by Forbes magazine among the 300 wealthiest Americans.

At its peak the Pritzker empire included a bank, a credit reporting agency, an industrial conglomerate, residential developments from coast to coast and the Hyatt Hotel chain, founded by her uncle Jay, among other investments.

Warner Bros., MGM, Universal Collectively Pull Nearly 2,000 Films From Netflix To Further Fragment The Online Movie Market
from the this-isn’t-helping dept

Michael Carusi points us to the news that Warner Bros., MGM and Universal Studios have agreed to pull nearly 2,000 films from Netflix’s library, in order to put them in the Warner Bros. Instant Archive. You may recall that Warner recently launched this archive, which is an incredibly overpriced and ridiculously limited offering. Apparently, they’re trying to bolster the offering in part by hurting Netflix. As we’ve warned, this sort of fragmentation does little to help anyone. Consumers don’t want to have multiple accounts for multiple services. They don’t want to have to worry about whether or not a particular title is available in one place or another. And they certainly don’t want movies to suddenly disappear from the service they had been already paying to get.

Everything about this move seems designed to piss people off, not provide them a better overall experience. Sure, Warner wants films for its own archive, but removing them from other services doesn’t suddenly make people run gleefully to join their service. It just makes people annoyed and resentful of Warner Bros., which is exactly not the way to encourage people to sign up for their new service. In the article linked above, it noted that some people were having “marathon” viewings of some of the films about to disappear from Netflix. Note that they weren’t planning to sign up for Warner’s lame archive, but rather watch while they could on the service they chose. One of the key lessons from the past decade or so of internet content is that you need to make accessing your content as convenient as possible. And Hollywood’s response is to do the opposite. Incredible.

•••JOURNALISM THEN AND NOW

On April 30th, as I reported, New York’s DeWitt Clinton High School celebrated the 100th anniversary of its pioneering student newspaper, The Clinton News. It was the newspaper I edited in 1960. Our faculty advisor and inspiration then was Lou Simon who spoke at the centenary event. Here are his remarks on Journalism Then and Now.

Fifty-eight years ago, when I told John McConnell, who was then chairman of the English Dept., that I no longer wanted to be adviser of the Class Nite senior show, his reply was “O.K.” And so, for several weeks, I felt relieved to be free of an extra-curricular activity for which I was totally unsuited.

Then, without warning and with a Gallic grin on his face, my beloved chairman announced that I would, instead, become faculty adviser of the Clinton News, an enterprise for which I was equally unsuited. Expectations for my performance were minimal, though, since the once prize-winning paper had been in free fall for some time.

Thus began an odyssey that would turn my professional career on its head and afford me the opportunity to work with some of the most remarkable students I would encounter in my many, many years of teaching. And what training and experience did I have for the job that had been bestowed on me? NONE. McConnell assured me that I’d pick things up as I went along and that the existing crop of Newsers would help me.

Unfortunately, since my immediate predecessor was a drama major who had no interest whatsoever in journalism, there was precious little his acolytes could teach me. I was on my own—as were the students I was chosen to advise. Our first issue reveals how ill prepared we both were to face the challenges that lay ahead.

To the rescue rode DeWitt C Reddick and Grant Milnor Hyde, revered authors of the journalism textbooks in use at the time. Helpful too were some old lesson plans that the venerable Ray “Phipsy” Philipson had left behind but that had not been used since his departure.

I dusted off the teacher’s copies of the books, flipped through the related lesson plans, and prayed for the best. “Pace yourself,” McConnell had advised me. And I took his advice, although double time was the only pace that would ensure my survival. By staying one chapter ahead of my students in that first year, I bluffed my way through the basics of high school journalism as propounded by Messrs. Reddick, Hyde, and Philipson.

The 50’s and 60’s were simpler, more innocent times for student journalists, and—in hindsight—I see that the body of knowledge I needed to transmit was simple and innocent. Student journalists had to master writing the summary lead (incorporating the 5W’s and an H) and the feature summary lead; they had to abide by the inverted pyramid style of writing and have a healthy respect for accuracy and objectivity; opinions were to be confined to the editorial page and to the much coveted column; in-depth reporting was in its infancy and—besides— there was a limit as to how deep the G.O. and the administration would allow you to dig.

New technologies have impacted and forever changed the field of journalism. Room 177, the Clinton News office, used three or four discarded Remington and Underwood typewriters, manual of course, to generate the copy that was then sent to a printer who set it all on a linotype machine and, in subsequent years, on an offset press.

Deadlines were critical since it took about four weeks—from assigning stories to editing the copy, to printing them, to proofreading, and ultimately to distribution to the student body. I’m sure today’s digital Newsers need but a fraction of that time to do the same job.

Were I teaching journalism today, my curriculum would be far more nuanced and sophisticated. In addition to stressing accuracy and objectivity I would devote some time to what I’d call factuality (Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report called it truthiness).

Nowadays no one lies or errs, he/she merely misspeaks (what a lovely word, “misspeaks”). Another lovely addition to the communications idiom is the word “spin.” It allows you to re-define, alter, modify, twist, distort, any remark in such a fashion as to suit your purposes rather than those of your adversary. It mocks the English language.
After Humpty Dumpty, in Through the Looking Glass, tells Alice that “glory” means a nice, knockdown dragout battle, and Alice insists that “glory” means no such thing, Humpty replies, “When I use a word it means exactly what I want it to mean, nothing more and nothing less.” Lewis Carroll foresaw the age of the spin-master.

The 50’s and 60’s were the heyday of print journalism, No one media mogul held a monopoly on the dissemination of information. Almost every single New York City High School published a newspaper in the second half of the 20th century. That compares to about half that number, 509, today. The city’s newsstands featured a dozen or more publications that covered a broad spectrum of political opinions.

Disc jockeys ruled the radio airwaves now dominated by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Shawn Hannity. John Cameron Swayzee and Doug Edwards and later the venerable Walter Cronkite brought us our nightly news and for in-depth reporting we had Edward R. Murrow. As for 24/7 coverage it wasn’t even a glint in Ted Turner’s eye.

Doctor Who in the British television science fiction series, “Face of Evil,” observes that, “You know the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don’t alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that need altering.”

To which I would add: The very powerful and the very stupid use facts the way a drunken man uses lamp-posts—for support rather than Illumination. In this age of instant reporting and tweets and blogs, there’s a temptation to latch on to any bit of information, sometimes to jump to conclusions… without the tedious, time-consuming relentless gathering of facts.

“Tedious” because fact gathering is not as straightforward as it once was. Once upon a time a fact was a fact was a fact. Nowadays we have true facts and false facts—with the truth of a fact dependent on who is uttering it. And, since facts shape opinions, it matters where you get your facts from. FOX news’s facts differ from MSNBC’s facts which, in turn, differ from CNN’s. And who, in my day, would have dreamt that if we wanted incisive commentary we would turn to the Comedy Channel’s John Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

A further span of the news horizon reveals what today’s outlets call Breaking News. But since Breaking News is evidently not swift enough to satisfy our news hunger, it is now augmented by crawling news. These news outbursts are aptly named, filled as they are with conjecture, disinformation, and hastily assembled factoids.

How refreshing it would be if someone stepped on and squooshed these crawlers before they emerged from their nests. As John Kass, columnist for the Chicago Tribune, recently wrote, “Wouldn’t it be nice to replace the usual claptrap with a crawl that read: WE WANT TO TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENED BUT GUESS WHAT?…WE JUST DON’T KNOW YET…WE DON’T HAVE THE FACTS… WE DON’T ACTUALLY KNOW IF THE BOMBER IS A DARK-SKINNED MALE. … YEAH, WE SAID IT ON THE AIR … BUT, WHAT THE HECK? … IT COULD BE A WHITE MAN. … SOME GUY TOLD US ABOUT ‘THE DARK-SKINNED MALE’ AND, WELL, OOPS … OUR BAD.… FOR NOW, WE JUST DON’T KNOW. … REPEAT … WE JUST DON’T KNOW. … WHEN WE DO HAVE FACTS … WHEN WE KNOW … WE’LL TELL YOU … REALLY. … UNTIL THEN … WE JUST DON’T KNOW … WE JUST DON’T … KNOW.”

Finally, we have the Social media—You Tubing, twitting, tweating facebooking, instagraming—all of which have given rise to “citizen journalism.” Everybody has a story and there’s somebody out there who wants to listen to it. In fact, one of the ways the news media know how to cover a story these days is by watching the attention it receives in social media,”
Time will tell what effect these media will have on the English language. I find it scary, though, that the once noble English language has been reduced to such utterances as 4gm (forgive me), but IWSN (I want sex now); to which the reply might be that’s 2FB (too freaking bad), YOYO (You’re on your own). If you’re now fotflyao (falling off the floor laughing your ass off), just think of the glorious iambic pentameter these syllables might produce. To which, all I can say is ADM…ADM (Ay dios mio, ay dios mio).

So is it time to write obituaries for print journalism and the English language?

I WANT TO TELL YOU BUT GUESS WHAT?…I JUST DON’T KNOW YET…I DON’T HAVE ALL THE FACTS…FOR NOW I JUST DON’T KNOW…WHEN I DO HAVE FACTS…WHEN I KNOW, I’LL TELL YOU…REALLY…UNTIL THEN I JUST DON’T KNOW…I JUST DON’T KNOW”
